206 A scarce H.L. Leonard built cane bait casting rod,
5’3 ½”, crimson silk inter-whipped, detachable 9 ¼” cork handle with nickel silver sliding reel fitting, stamped “The H.L. Leonard Rod, Leonard & Mills Co., Makers”, one piece cane section with nickel silver suction ferrule, agate lined full-open bridge rings throughout, six silk inter-whippings lacking and rings later re-whipped in darker silk, contained in original bamboo and brass capped tube with applied paper label printed WDC’s address details and ink inscribed “5’ 3 ½” single handed spinning rod by Leonard N.J., 4 ½” top joint, 4 agate rings, 9” handle, Weight 6ozs, 1908”, in original cloth bag £400-600
** GT surmises that the handle on the above rod was based on/or possibly produced by the Samson Steel Rod Hardware Co., Torrington, to their design and possibly later stamped with the Leonard details. This style of handle was introduced by Samson in 1906. a similar handle by Samson Steel Rod is included with the lot which GT used for comparison purposes.
