Description

** There is no record of an African fish species called a “Grebach”, it is likely that the local fishermen may have named the fish to that of the captor, as the meaning of this word is spiritual healer, or one of grace. The specimen is actually a large example of a species known as a Seventy Four Sea Bream, so named as the stripes resemble the cannon formation along the sides on a 74 gun galleon. The species was fished to near extinction during the early-mid 20th Century, in 1989 a moratorium was placed on the capture of this rare species, which is now making a very slow recovery. Although we are unable to confirm, the captor may possible have been the legendary cricketer W.G. Grace (1848-1915), one of the most influential figures in British cricket, he was also a keen angler. We have not been able to establish if he travelled to South Africa in 1894.
